Oi Kastushika 葛飾応為
Ōi Katsushika – Hokusai’s Daughter
Ōi Katsushika – Oei 1801 -1866 Daughter of world famous Hokusai. Ōi was known accomplished painter who also worked as a production assistant to her father. There are many references about her but birth/death many things about her life are in the mystery. It is true that she painted with her father for 20-30 years until his death. Popular story is that they both immersed into art so deep, house was in the mess, kept moving once the house became inhabitable. (Over 90 times!) Ōi was married for a while but she laughed at her husband’s painting skill that she was divorced..unlike her fathers, Ōi’s work showed light and shadow, possibly influenced by western art that just have been introduced around this time in Japan. Also the way she painted fingers and hair. There aren’t many known works by her, but in recent study shows she may have been involved in Hokusai’s work far more than just an assistant. Some well known works are actual by her, or not. Apparently she had strong chin, didn’t like cleaning, liked smoking & alcohol ( Hokusai didn’t drink, he liked sweets) 8 years after Hokusai’s death, she left house one day saying “will go painting” and never returned. I’ve used reference image from tv drama about her, and imagination.
